Program Description

Human Rights Global Service Learning in Georgia!

Make spring break your most fulfilling week of the year! Spend a full week in the Atlanta, Georgia region exploring the relationship between the U.S. Civil Rights movement and today’s global human rights concerns while serving the globally diverse community of Clarkston. With its high population of recently resettled refugees, Clarkston is a small town that takes you on a trip around the world in just a few blocks.
This program will focus on servant leadership and community building with organizations dedicated to education and health. Clarkston is a vibrant community where new neighbors and long-time residents are embracing the challenges that come with building a strong community and discovering the strength in diversity. The residents, originating from Burma, Bhutan, Cuba, Somalia, the Congo, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, bring difficult circumstances and work to rebuild their lives. Children attend schools where 60 languages are spoken and about 40% live below the poverty line. We will work on volunteer projects with organizations serving refugee women, children, and the municipality.

PLANNED TRAVEL HIGHLIGHTS:
• Welcome reception at Amani Women’s Center in Clarkston
