Description

Zambia is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa bordered by the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the northeast, Malawi to the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to the south, and Angola to the west. Zambia is the 39th largest country in the world with a population of 11,668,000 people. The topography of Zambia consists mostly of a high plateau, with some hills and mountains, dissected by river valleys. The two major river basins are Zambezi basin the south and the Congo basin in the north. Lake Tanganyika, which belongs to the Congo basin is a major hydrographic feature of the country. The climate is tropical classified as humid subtropical and tropical wet and dry. The two mains seasons are a summer, rainy season from November to April and winter, dry season from May to November.

Zambia politics take place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic. The president is the head of state, head of government, and of a multiparty system. The government exercises executive power, while legislative power is vested in the government and parliament. The country is divided into nine provinces and each is administered by an appointed deputy minister. The unicameral National Assembly is the country's legislative body and consists of 158 members who all serve a five year term. The Supreme Court is the highest court and the court of appeal, while below it are: the high court, magistrate's court, and local courts.

The culture of Zambia is mainly indigenous Bantu culture mixed with European influences. Originally the people lived in independent tribes, each with their own ways of life. Today however, Zambia has become one of the most highly urbanized countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Zambia is officially a Christian nation, but a wide variety of religious traditions exist. In 2011, Zambia is going to host the tenth All-Africa Games for which three new stadiums will be built. The Lusaka stadium will have a capacity of 70,000 spectators while the Ndola, and Livingstone stadiums will hold 50,000 people each.
