Program Description

Experience an unforgettable immersion into the wonder and beauty of Italy during this unique ten-day exploration of Rome, Florence, Venice, and more - infused by your program leader’s deep love and knowledge of each visited site.

The course examines the foundations of western architecture in ancient Rome and traces its evolution from Medieval ingenuity through Baroque theatricality and current innovations within the green building movement in Italy. Special emphasis is placed upon the birth of the Renaissance in Florence and its further manifestation in both Rome and Venice.

Selected sites have been carefully choreographed to meaningfully experience seminal form- and space-making ideas at their source through direct personal experience. . . and to reveal core patterns of social, political, cultural, economic, and technological innovations in Italy that directly influenced the development of Western culture. Many selected sites are “hidden gems” that are not often visited by tourists.

Introductory lecture sessions will be held before leaving for Italy that are aimed at preparing students with historical, philosophical, and religious background for the sites to be visited.
