Study Abroad Policies and Expectations

Course Registration

Course registration for study abroad courses is handled directly by the Center for Global Education staff and enrolled students will be updated by email when this occurs.

Email Communications

All email communication from the Center for Global Education will be through HACC HawkMail. Students participating in Center programs are required to activate their HACC HawkMail account. Students are expected to check their HawkMail account on a regular basis as important information regarding study programs will be sent to that address. Failure to check HawkMail is not an acceptable excuse for failing to meet various program deadlines.

Financial Aid

Financial aid can be used to cover your study abroad program fee. Contact the Financial Aid office on your campus for information regarding funds available to you. If you are relying on financial aid to pay for the balance of your program fees and the disbursement date is after the date program fees are due paid in full, you MUST be in contact with the Financial Aid Office AND the Center for Global Education so that arrangements can be made to extend your payment deadline. The Center for Global Education will maintain communication with Financial Aid but it is the student’s responsibility to make contact and supply Financial Aid with requested information.

Scholarships

Scholarships for study abroad are available through HACC Foundation. A link to information on scholarships can be found at: www.hacc.edu/global/StudyAbroad and https://hacc.academicworks.com
Questions regarding scholarships should be directed to HACC Foundation located in TL200, Harrisburg Campus. The deadline to apply for scholarships offered through HACC Foundation for the spring and summer 2019 terms is SEPTEMBER 19, 2018.  Applying for scholarships does not guarantee selection to receive funds.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance will be provided to all study abroad students participating in international programs and is included in the program fee. The Center for Global Education will register enrolled students into the policy and forward all materials prior to the start of travel. It is the student’s responsibility to submit any/all claims for incidents that occur while studying abroad.

Passport and Visas

Passports are required for all travel outside the United States and it is the enrolled student’s responsibility to pay for and secure their passport no less than 45 days prior to travel. Passport cards are not acceptable for any of the study abroad programs. Passports must be valid for 6 months after the scheduled date for your program’s return travel. Information is available online (http://travel.state.gov/passport) and applications are available at the Center for Global Education Office, located in C217 on the HACC Harrisburg Campus. For countries that require entry visas, enrolled students are financially responsible for the cost of the visa and ensure a valid passport is available at time of visa application (typically 45 or more days prior to travel). HACC students holding passports not issued through the United States are responsible for securing entry/exit/transit visas prior to travel.

Passports and visas (if applicable) must be made available to the Center within 2 weeks of acceptance into the program, unless otherwise notified. If the enrolled student has applied for but not yet received their passport, a Passport Waiver must be completed and returned to the Center in lieu of the passport; however, a copy of the passport will still be required at least 45 days prior to program departure date, unless otherwise notified.

Orientation Sessions

Students are required to attend mandatory pre-travel orientation sessions. Pre-travel orientation dates will be determined by the Center for Global Education and the programs' faculty leaders.  Once determined, students will be notified of the date, time and location.
